The initial appointment to CRED membership is for a fixed term of three years. Prospective members must exhibit a strong commitment to the goals of the Center and should indicate in their application the RFAs with which they desire to be affiliated. Appointments are made by the Internal Advisory Committee to one of two categories of membership:
- Full Members have current faculty appointments at UTMDACC, UT Austin or UTSPH at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor and have significant, active, peer-reviewed grant support (e.g., NIH R01 support or similar).
- Associate Members have current faculty appointments at UTMDACC , UT Austin or UTSPH at the level of Instructor, Assistant, Associate or Full Professor but do not have active grant support at the time of appointment.
The IAC re-evaluates each Center member with respect to membership status on an annual basis. Associate Members who have received significant, peer-reviewed grant support since the last evaluation are moved to Full Member status. Full Members who have lost such grant support for two consecutive evaluations are moved to Associate Member status. Proposed changes in RFA affiliation are also considered by the IAC at this time. Additionally, near the end of each fixed term of membership, each Member is evaluated by the IAC for renewal of membership for another three-year term. The appropriate membership category is determined as described for the annual evaluation above. In addition, the IAC determines the extent to which the member has made a contribution to the CRED. Four factors are considered:
- The level of the member's participation in Center activities, including attendance at the CRED meetings, symposia, retreats, etc.;
- Involvement in COEC activities;
- The level of the member's collaborative interactions, as evidenced by joint publications and/or joint grants with other Center members; and
- The extent to which the member has cited the Center grant on publications that utilize Center resources.
